Francis Olusegun, the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN) best graduating student, has stirred conversation online with his view on what a First Class really means.
In a post on X, he wrote: “Till today, I still always feel First class starts from 4.8+.”

He shared the post while quoting a tweet by Ademola A. PhD, who wrote: “I also agree that 4.80 CGPA now looks ordinary in today’s Best Graduating Student landscape.”
The remarks come as many Nigerian universities celebrate graduates with near-perfect CGPAs, and the competition for the best graduating student title gets tighter each year.
On the 5-point scale used by most Nigerian universities, First Class honours starts from 4.50.
Within hours, the post had drawn more than 16,000 views, with dozens of replies and reposts from users sharing their own opinions.
The reactions show how much academic performance is discussed among Nigerian students and graduates.
