Kayode Adewale, a mathematics and STEM educator at Imagbon/Imaka Comprehensive High School in Ogun State, Nigeria, has been named among the finalists for the prestigious $1 million Global Teacher Prize. Teaching in a semi-urban community where many students come from low-income farming families, Kayode has faced significant challenges but has turned these into opportunities for innovation and growth.
By incorporating local languages like Yoruba and Hausa into his lessons, he helps his students grasp complex concepts in mathematics. He has also created culturally tailored instructional videos and used practical examples to make academic material more accessible. Beyond this, Kayode integrates technology into his teaching by introducing platforms like the Technology-Assisted Management Solution (TAIMS) and educational tools such as Inquiry Learning Space (ILS) and PhET simulations. These efforts have helped his students transform their smartphones from entertainment devices into powerful learning tools, improving their exam performance and equipping them with digital literacy skills essential for the modern world.
Kayode’s impact extends far beyond his classroom. Through his Transformation1090 Initiative, he has trained over 30,000 teachers, helping them adopt technology in their teaching practices. He is also the founder of the Ogun517GoToSpace program, which inspires interest in space science and STEM careers by collaborating with global experts, including professionals from NASA. His environmental advocacy is reflected in projects like tree-planting initiatives and climate change simulations, empowering students to take action for sustainability.
His achievements have earned him widespread recognition. He was named the 2nd Runner-Up for Best Teacher in Nigeria and has participated in prestigious programs such as the Fulbright Teaching Excellence and Achievement Program. These accolades underscore his commitment to lifelong learning and sharing best practices with educators worldwide.
