The Vice-Chancellor of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE), Professor Abayomi Sunday Fasina, has admitted and expressed regret over making romantic advances toward a married staff member, Engineer Folasade Adebayo, Deputy Director of Works and Services at the institution. The incident, exposed through leaked audio recordings, has sparked accusations of sexual harassment and abuse of office.
In the recordings, Fasina acknowledged his advances, stating, “I apologize for making advances toward you. It was a mistake.” He further criticized Adebayo for allegedly sharing their private conversations, labeling her “toxic and dangerous.”
When contacted in September 2024, Adebayo confirmed the harassment allegations but stated she needed to consult with her family before providing more details. In a letter addressed to the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) FUOYE chapter, she requested an investigation into rumors of petitions and harassment within the university, denying involvement in any immoral acts or petition writing.
“I humbly request that this respected union investigates the issue and saves me from further defamation and harassment,” she wrote.
The controversy deepened when a query letter from the university’s registrar accused Adebayo of misconduct for being absent during the Vice-Chancellor’s visit to her office in July 2024. Adebayo refuted these claims, insisting she had been unfairly targeted.
The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) FUOYE chapter has since called for a comprehensive investigation into Professor Fasina’s administration. In a joint statement, the union accused the VC of sexual harassment, victimization of staff, abuse of office, and fostering a hostile work environment. They also demanded transparency and accountability regarding the university’s financial operations.
“The Vice-Chancellor’s actions have led to widespread staff intimidation and damaged confidence in the university’s leadership,” the union’s statement read.
As this scandal unfolds, calls for independent investigations and reforms at FUOYE continue to mount, with staff and students urging relevant authorities to address the allegations and restore integrity within the institution.
