The Federal School of Surveying (FSS), Oyo, recently held its 36th matriculation ceremony, welcoming 459 new students for the 2024/25 academic session.
Addressing the fresh intake, the institution’s Rector, Dr. D.N. Olayinka-Dosumu, assured them of a robust, skill-driven education in surveying and geoinformatics—fields in high demand globally. She emphasized that their training would not only prepare them for the job market but also equip them with entrepreneurial skills to thrive independently.
Congratulating the students on choosing a rewarding profession, she urged them to uphold the institution’s values and abide by its regulations, reminding them of their responsibility as ambassadors of the school.
Dr. Olayinka-Dosumu also addressed misconceptions about FSS Oyo being a monotechnic institution. She highlighted that the school, founded in 1908, now offers diploma and higher national diploma programs in cartography, GIS, photogrammetry, remote sensing, and computer science—all accredited by the National Board for Technical Education (NBTE). She further reassured that more programs are in the pipeline.
Speaking on the institution’s future, she revealed that efforts are underway to elevate FSS Oyo to a degree-awarding university. She commended Senator Yinus Abiodun Akintunde for championing the bill to upgrade the school’s status, noting that it is nearing its second reading in the National Assembly. She expressed optimism about the President’s approval once it passes.
The rector also acknowledged the unwavering support of Oyo town, community leaders, and other stakeholders who have been instrumental in this transition. She noted that once approved, the institution will be renamed the Federal University of Geoinformatics.
“Meanwhile, the Federal School of Surveying, Oyo, is undergoing a series of upgrades in teaching, research, infrastructure, and human capital development to meet university standards. Many of our lecturers are acquiring doctoral degrees in preparation for this transition,” she stated.
She further highlighted the school’s investment in modern learning resources, including a fully virtual library and research facilities equipped with artificial intelligence. She called on the Federal Government to extend TETFUND support to the institution, stressing that its Governing Council, comprising representatives from various ministries and the Armed Forces, is working towards achieving its long-term vision.
Guest lecturer Dr. J.E.T. Babalola from Ajayi Crowther University also spoke at the ceremony, urging the new students to stay committed and focused. He underscored the significance of FSS Oyo in national development, particularly in geoinformatics and GIS.
According to him, “Many of the modern developments in Nigeria would not have been possible without the pivotal role played by the Federal School of Surveying.”
As FSS Oyo moves closer to achieving university status, it continues to solidify its legacy as a leader in surveying and geoinformatics education.
