Northwest University Kano Holds 13th Orientation Exercise for Newly Admitted Students

Northwest University Kano (NWUK) on Monday, 15th June 2026, successfully conducted its 13th Orientation Exercise for newly admitted students of the 2025/2026 Academic Session, with hundreds of fresh students participating in the event held at the Muhammadu Sanusi II Theatre, Main Campus.

The orientation programme, which witnessed an impressive turnout of newly admitted students, was described as one of the most comprehensive in the University’s history due to the variety of lectures and presentations delivered by distinguished university officials, security agencies, and professionals from different sectors.

In his welcome address, the Dean of Student Affairs, Dr. Ibrahim Musa, warmly received the fresh students and congratulated them on securing admission into the university. He encouraged them to take advantage of the orientation programme to familiarize themselves with the University’s rules, regulations, and academic culture.

Delivering her address, the Vice-Chancellor of Northwest University Kano, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, congratulated the newly admitted students and reminded them of the privilege and responsibility that come with gaining admission into the institution.

She emphasized three important points for the students to remember throughout their academic journey. Firstly, she noted that thousands of applicants sought admission into the university, but only a fortunate few were offered the opportunity, urging them to appreciate and maximize the privilege. Secondly, she stressed that students were admitted not merely to obtain degrees but to graduate with excellent academic results. Thirdly, she reminded them that university education is built on both character and learning, emphasizing that certificates are awarded based on academic achievement as well as good conduct.

Professor Bayero further encouraged students to cultivate entrepreneurial skills and become self-reliant, highlighting the importance of innovation and productivity in today’s competitive world. She also strongly warned against examination malpractice and other forms of academic misconduct, urging students to uphold integrity and discipline throughout their studies.

In a touching moment during the programme, one of the Students presented a beautifully crafted portrait of the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Amina Salihi Bayero, as a birthday gift in recognition of her recent birthday celebration. The gesture attracted applause from participants and added a memorable highlight to the orientation exercise.

The Registrar of the University, Dr. Adm. Isyaku Adamu, delivered a presentation on the history, vision, and mission of Northwest University Kano, providing participants with a deeper understanding of the institution’s founding philosophy, goals, and commitment to academic excellence.

The orientation programme also featured a series of enlightening lectures from experts and stakeholders. Representing the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Mr. Musa Bulus Agwan delivered a presentation on the dangers of drug abuse and pathways to maintaining a drug-free lifestyle. He cautioned students against substance abuse and encouraged them to make responsible choices throughout their university life.

Similarly, ACP Jamilu Muhammad of the Nigeria Police Force educated students on external security awareness, offering practical safety tips and guidance on personal security within and outside the campus environment.

The University Librarian, Dr. Karimatu Isa Maisango, delivered an engaging lecture on library resources and digital learning opportunities available to students. She encouraged the new entrants to take advantage of the university’s library facilities, electronic databases, and digital platforms to enhance their academic performance and research capabilities.

Other presentations covered a wide range of topics essential to students’ academic and personal development. These included health and wellness, sports and recreational activities, level coordinatorship, academic regulations and examination procedures, career development, information and communication technology (ICT), and nurturing students’ potential through mentorship.

The extensive orientation programme provided participants with valuable knowledge and practical guidance aimed at ensuring a smooth transition into university life while preparing them for academic success and responsible citizenship.

The event reaffirmed Northwest University Kano‘s commitment to producing graduates who are academically sound, morally upright, innovative, and equipped with the skills necessary to contribute meaningfully to society and national development.

As the 2025/2026 academic session progresses, the university leadership expressed optimism that the newly admitted students would uphold the institution’s values and strive for excellence in all aspects of their academic pursuits.
