The Igbo-Etiti Local Government Council in Enugu State has issued a stern warning to private schools still observing the unlawful Monday sit-at-home, threatening to shut down any institution that refuses to comply.
During a meeting with private school proprietors in Ogbede, Dr. Amadi Aroh, Chairman of the Public Schools Supervision Committee (PSSC), emphasized that security measures were in place to ensure students’ safety and urged parents to send their children to school without fear.
Dr. Aroh stated that the directive aligns with the vision of the council chairman, Dr. Eric Odo, to maintain uninterrupted academic activities in both public and private schools. He expressed disappointment that while public schools in Igbo-Etiti had resumed full operations on Mondays, many private institutions were still reluctant to do so.
“The local government has successfully stopped sit-at-home in public schools. However, the private schools have not adjusted to the new reality, thus reducing the number of schooling days. From next Monday, the PSSC will begin monitoring, and any private school that remains closed will be shut down,” he warned.
He further stated that non-compliant proprietors would be seen as sabotaging government efforts to improve education in the region. He stressed that both the local government and the State Ministry of Education would impose sanctions on any private school that defies the directive.
Dr. Aroh also highlighted the importance of quality education and the need to uphold high teaching and learning standards in private schools.
Speaking on behalf of the proprietors, Dominic Ngwu acknowledged the council’s efforts to enhance education in Igbo-Etiti and assured that private school owners would adhere to the directive and resume full operations on Mondays.
