The University of Ilesa (UNILESA), Osun State, has been thrown into mourning following the sudden death of Gbolahan Ojolo, a 100-level student from the Department of Business Administration.
According to an official statement released on Saturday by the University Registrar, Mr. Funso Ojo, Gbolahan lost his life on Friday evening, April 18, 2025. The incident occurred while he was playing a game on his phone, which was plugged in and charging at the time. It is believed that a lightning strike during a thunderstorm triggered the electrocution in his room at a private hostel near the Prototype Engineering Development Institute (PEDI) junction.
The school confirmed that the Nigeria Police were immediately notified and have since launched a thorough investigation into the incident. Once clearance was given by the authorities, his body was moved to the morgue at Wesley Guild Hospital, Ilesa.
The University also shared that the father of the deceased was promptly contacted and has since arrived in Ilesa. He was received and comforted by senior university officials and the Area Commander of the Nigeria Police Force.
“In a show of deep concern and solidarity, the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Taiwo Asaolu; the Registrar, Mr. Funso Ojo; the Dean of Student Affairs; the Dean of the Faculty of Management Sciences; the Head of the Department of Business Administration; and the Area Commander of Police were all physically present to receive and console the bereaved father,” the statement read.
