Kano Deploys 17,600 Guards to Boost Safety in Public Schools

Kano State has taken a major step toward improving school safety with the recruitment of 17,600 security guards to protect public schools across the state. Governor Abba Yusuf announced the initiative, which takes effect immediately.

In a statement issued on Monday by his spokesperson, Sunusi Dawakin Tofa, the governor revealed that 400 guards will be deployed to each of the state’s 44 local government areas.

Governor Yusuf emphasized that the move is part of a broader effort to ensure the safety of students and teachers in response to growing security concerns.

“This decision was born out of our administration’s commitment to protect our children and teachers from emerging security threats. We cannot afford to allow fear or insecurity to disrupt the education of our future leaders,” he stated.

The security guards will receive training and be assigned to monitor school gates, detect unusual activity, and collaborate with security agencies when necessary.

This initiative adds to the administration’s ongoing education reforms, which include:

  • Solar power installation in 200 public schools
  • Distribution of instructional materials
  • Plans to permanently employ qualified BESDA staff

Governor Yusuf reaffirmed that security, education, and youth empowerment remain at the core of his administration’s agenda. He also urged parents, traditional rulers, and community leaders to support efforts aimed at creating a safe and inclusive learning environment across Kano State.
