The Federal Government has approved a new welfare package for non-teaching staff in federal universities.
The package includes increased hazard, responsibility and work-related allowances following months of engagement with NASU.
The revised package takes effect from January 1, 2026.
Hazard allowances have been raised by 35 per cent across eligible salary grades.
Directors will now receive an annual responsibility allowance of ₦600,000 for the first time.
The approval was contained in a circular issued by the National Salaries, Incomes and Wages Commission.
Higher responsibility allowances have also been approved for registrars, bursars, deputy registrars, deputy bursars, deputy directors and heads of sections.
Laboratory hazard allowances for workers on CONTISS 1–5 have increased to ₦243,000 annually from ₦180,000.
Employees on CONTISS 6–15 will now receive ₦486,000, up from ₦360,000.
The government also approved upward reviews of field trip, teaching practice, industrial supervision and SWEP allowances.
The Provision Tools Allowance has been merged into the Consolidated Non-Teaching Tools Allowance.
Laboratory students-to-staff ratio supplementation will now be treated under excess workload provisions.
The enhanced welfare package follows an agreement reached between the Federal Government and NASU on June 29, 2026.
The move is part of efforts to improve the remuneration of university non-teaching staff amid prevailing economic challenges.
