Former President of the Senate, Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan, has sponsored 1,178 out-of-school children back to school under an education intervention programme in Nguru Local Government Area of Yobe State.
The initiative, tagged “Second Chance: A Senator Ahmed Ibrahim Lawan (SAIL) Foundation Education Development Initiative,” targets vulnerable children across Yobe North Senatorial District.
Under the programme, the beneficiaries, drawn from 17 secondary schools in Nguru, will have their secondary education fully funded by the foundation.
The sponsorship package covers school fees, school bags, textbooks, uniforms and sandals.
Speaking during the exercise, Lawan said the intervention was informed by his conviction that no child should be denied access to education because of poverty or other challenges.
“Education remains the most enduring investment we can make in our youth. I have never wavered in the conviction that no child should be left behind because of his or her circumstance,” he said.
Lawan urged parents and guardians to support the children to ensure they remained in school and completed their education.
The intervention comes amid growing concerns over the large number of out-of-school children in northern Nigeria, where poverty, insecurity and limited access to education continue to undermine school enrolment and retention.
