Nigeria has recorded an impressive showing at the 2026 Singapore International Mathematics Olympiad Challenge (SIMOC), with two students finishing among the world’s top 10 in their respective categories.
The competition, held in Singapore from July 17 to 21, attracted 2,285 students from 40 countries and 1,113 schools, making it one of the most competitive mathematics contests in the world.
The Nigerian Director of the Singapore International Mathematics Contests Centre (SIMCC), Mercy Josiah, confirmed the results, highlighting the outstanding performances of the Nigerian team.
Agu Chijindu Chukwuka of Grundtvig International Secondary School, Oba, Anambra State, won two gold medals and a bronze, placing 8th globally in the Grade 7 category. He claimed gold in the Mathematics Olympiad Contest and Math Warriors, and bronze in Math Master Mind.
Okpere-Udo Hallel of Graceland International School, Port Harcourt, delivered an even more remarkable result, placing 2nd globally in the Grade 10 Mathematics Olympiad Contest. He won gold in that contest and a bronze in Math Warriors.
Other Nigerian medallists include Nwawulu Chimgozirim Kevin of Grundtvig International Secondary School, who won gold in Math Master Mind for the Lower Secondary category, and Stanley Iduate Samson and Adepetu Mofopefoluwa Oluwasemilore, both from Port Harcourt schools, who won gold in Math Master Mind for the Upper Secondary category.
Josiah described SIMOC as one of the world’s most demanding mathematics competitions. The award ceremony was attended by Nigeria’s Ambassador to Singapore, Francisca Kemi Omayuli, the United States Ambassador and envoys from other participating countries.
Josiah said the results reflected the potential of Nigerian students to compete at the highest level globally when given quality education, mentorship and international exposure.
