The Lagos State University (LASU) Senate has elected Prof. Opebi Afisi as the new Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academics). The announcement was made in a statement released by Mrs. Oluwayemisi Thomas-Onashile, the university’s Deputy Registrar and Coordinator for the Centre for Information and Public Relations.
Prof. Afisi, a distinguished scholar in philosophy, will take over from Prof. Olufunsho Abayomi Omobitan, whose tenure ends on January 29. Afisi is set to officially assume office on January 30.
Born on July 15, 1974, into the Afisi-Shokun-Agbajegoriite-Onilegbale Royal House of Isale-Eko, Lagos Island, Prof. Afisi’s academic journey has been nothing short of remarkable. He earned his Bachelor of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Lagos in 1998 and completed his National Youth Service at Lagos State Model College, Obadore, from 1998 to 1999.
Continuing his academic pursuit, Afisi obtained a Master of Arts in Philosophy from the University of Lagos in 2002. He later advanced his studies at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand, where he earned a Ph.D. in Philosophy in 2014.
Prof. Afisi began his career at LASU in March 2007 as an Assistant Lecturer. Over the years, his dedication and expertise led to his promotion to Associate Professor in 2020 and full Professor of Philosophy in 2023. Notably, he holds the distinction of being the first indigenous Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at LASU.
In addition to his academic contributions, Afisi also served as the Head of the Philosophy Department from March 2019 to October 2021.
