Bill for Federal Science and Tech University in Lagos Passes Second Reading

A bill proposing the establishment of the Federal University of Science and Technology in Epe, Lagos State, has passed its second reading in the Senate.

Sponsored by Senate Leader Opeyemi Bamidele and seconded by Deputy Senate Leader Oyelola Ashiru, the bill aims to address the growing need for skilled graduates in science and technology fields that can drive innovation and economic development in Nigeria.

Bamidele, who represents Ekiti Central, emphasized the importance of this initiative during the debate. According to him, the university is designed to provide top-tier education in a wide range of fields, including Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Civil Engineering, Software Engineering, Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, Physics, Chemistry, Biology, and Mathematics.

“This is the fundamental justification for the establishment of this specialised institution of higher learning, Federal University of Science and Technology, Epe, Lagos State,” he said.

He further noted that achieving the administration’s ambition of placing Nigeria among the world’s leading economies would require aligning educational institutions with the country’s technological and economic goals.

Adding his voice, Deputy Senate Leader Ashiru pointed out that Epe is fast emerging as a hub of industrial and economic growth in Lagos, due to its proximity to Ibeju-Lekki — the core of ongoing industrial, creative, and real estate development in the state.

He urged the Senate to support the bill fully, highlighting how the proposed university could benefit both the immediate community and the country as a whole.

The bill was passed for second reading and has been referred to the Senate Committee on Tertiary Institutions and TETFund, which is expected to present its report within four weeks.
