Graceland College Students Shine as National Mathematics Champions

Agbo Adoga and Elvis Chiedozie, students of Graceland College, Port Harcourt, have made their school and families proud by emerging as the top winners of the 2025 National Mathematics Tournament, organized by the Maths4Life Foundation.

The duo showcased outstanding teamwork and mathematical prowess, outperforming eight other schools from seven states across Nigeria. Their victory earned them a total cash prize of N3 million, with each student receiving N1 million. In recognition of the school’s excellence in mathematics education, Graceland College and their mathematics teacher were also awarded N1 million.

Loyola Jesuit College, Abuja, secured the first runner-up position, receiving N2 million, while Austica Memorial College, Anambra State, finished as the second runner-up with a prize of N1 million.

At the award ceremony, Omoniyi Osuntuyi, President of Maths4Life Foundation, praised sponsors and volunteers for their dedication to advancing mathematics education in Nigeria. He highlighted that the 2025 tournament coincided with the foundation’s 10th anniversary, reinforcing its mission to provide opportunities for students, particularly those from underprivileged backgrounds, to compete at a national level.

“The initial round of the tournament was conducted virtually on February 1, 2025, with over 3,000 students from all 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory participating. We awarded cash prizes of N100,000 each to the top three students from six regions—South-West, South-South, South-East, North-West, North-East, and North Central—honoring 18 outstanding students. The eight schools that qualified for today’s finals represent Lagos, Ogun, Edo, Anambra, Rivers, Kaduna, and the Federal Capital Territory,” Osuntuyi said.

He emphasized the foundation’s long-standing vision of identifying and nurturing students with exceptional mathematical abilities while fostering healthy competition, teamwork, and sportsmanship. “To our global volunteers, Mathematics for Life Foundation deeply appreciates your contributions, and we remain committed to enhancing the quality of education at all levels worldwide,” he added.

Jessica Ogwu, a distinguished Data Engineer, delivered an inspiring talk titled ‘From Classroom to Career: How Math Shapes Your Future’. She encouraged students to embrace mathematics as a tool for problem-solving across various fields. Her session provided valuable insights into the real-world applications of mathematics, sparking curiosity and enthusiasm among attendees.

The event also celebrated corporate sponsors who have supported the foundation’s mission, including Ekaabo Travels and Tours Limited, PESO Energy Services, AOS Orwell Limited, Ajivin Group of Companies, Tem Ade Limited, Vaughn Energy Services Limited, and Peachy Party Pieces.

Since its inception in 2015, the Maths4Life Foundation has championed mathematics education through the National Mathematics Tournament. The competition continues to highlight how mathematical knowledge enhances personal development, broadens career opportunities, and fosters a culture of excellence in education.
