President Bola Tinubu has approved the conversion of Tai Solarin University of Education (TASUED) in Ijagun, Ogun State, into a Federal University. This move marks a significant milestone for Nigeria’s education sector, further strengthening the nation’s commitment to quality teacher training.
TASUED, established in 2005 by the Ogun State Government, was named after Dr. Tai Solarin, a respected educationist and activist who founded Mayflower School in Ikenne. It holds the distinction of being Nigeria’s first specialised university of education.
In granting approval, President Tinubu expressed gratitude to the Ogun State government for allowing the federal government to take over one of the state’s most valuable educational institutions.
“It is an opportunity for the Federal Government to honour Chief Obafemi Awolowo, who began the revolutionary free education programme in Western Nigeria, and Dr. Tai Solarin, who spent most of his life educating our children and impacting patriotic and leadership lessons in them at Mayflower School in Ikenne. It is also in honour of the Awujale of Ijebuland, who played a critical role in preventing the university’s closure in 2012, just seven years after its establishment,” he said.
The transition of TASUED into a Federal University of Education aligns with the government’s broader efforts to enhance teacher education and improve the quality of instruction at all levels. With this new status, TASUED joins the ranks of Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education in Owerri and Adeyemi Federal University of Education in Ondo, making it one of only three federal universities dedicated to education in Nigeria.
This transformation is expected to bring increased federal support, better resources, and expanded opportunities for students and educators, reinforcing the critical role of teacher training in national development.
The Students Forum Nigeria serves as the ultimate hub for Nigerian students, fostering academic growth, social engagement, and knowledge sharing.
