The Athol Mann Award for Classical Voice is a unique opportunity for talented vocal students at the New Zealand School of Music, Victoria University of Wellington. Established in 2018, this $3,000 scholarship celebrates the legacy of the late Emeritus Professor Athol Mann—an accomplished accountant, opera lover, and former Dean of the university’s business school.
Though his professional path led him to accountancy, Professor Mann originally set out to study history and remained a devoted arts enthusiast throughout his life. He often spoke fondly of his teenage years, when a performance of Verdi’s Rigoletto in Christchurch sparked a lifelong passion for opera. “I had an addiction for music the way some others have an addiction for golf,” he once said.
The award supports students majoring in Classical Voice, encouraging them to pursue further studies and opportunities in opera and classical performance.
