Alvan Ikoku Federal University of Education (AIFUE) in Owerri has officially matriculated 2,412 new students for the 2023/2024 academic session. This number includes 2,370 students pursuing Bachelor’s degrees and 42 enrolled in professional Diploma in Education programs.
This marks a significant milestone for the university, as it celebrates its first matriculation ceremony following its elevation to a full-fledged University of Education by the Federal Government in 2023.
During the event, the Acting Vice Chancellor, Prof. A.C. Onyeka, spoke passionately about the university’s vision to reshape teacher education. He emphasized AIFUE’s dedication to blending innovation, research, and global best practices in pedagogy, aiming to produce top-tier educators who will influence education both locally and globally.

“Our mission is clear: to nurture individuals who will not only teach but also inspire, lead, and drive positive change in the educational sector and beyond,” Prof. Onyeka shared.
He further highlighted that the establishment of AIFUE reflects the government’s commitment to enhancing teacher education as a foundation for national growth. “Education is the key to shaping minds, fostering creativity, and building a progressive and prosperous society. At AIFUE, we are committed to ensuring that every student who passes through our institution is equipped with the knowledge, the skills, and the values needed to contribute meaningfully to national and global development.”
Prof. Onyeka also urged the matriculating students to take the matriculation oath seriously, viewing it as a solemn commitment to follow the university’s rules and regulations. He stressed that any student involved in dishonest activities, such as forging university documents or engaging in fraud, would face severe legal consequences, including permanent expulsion.
“All students are expected to uphold the highest standards of discipline, integrity, and responsibility. Violations of university regulations will not be tolerated, and disciplinary actions, including legal consequences and expulsion, will be enforced to maintain order and protect the academic community,” he stated.
Concluding his address, the Acting Vice Chancellor reminded the new students that their enrollment at AIFUE was not only a privilege but also a responsibility. He urged them to grow into ethical professionals who would make significant contributions to society through their knowledge and actions.
