Are you a young researcher with a big idea for transforming the way we produce and consume food? The 2025 World Food Forum (WFF) Transformative Research Challenge (TRC) is your opportunity to bring that idea to life—with funding, mentorship, and global recognition.
Launched in 2021 by the WFF Youth Innovation Lab, the TRC continues to spotlight youth-driven innovation in agrifood systems. Backed by the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) and other leading global institutions, this competition is about turning fresh research into practical solutions.

- Up to $10,000 in research funding for winning teams.
- An additional $10,000 for the overall winning team.
- Global visibility through the WFF website and social media platforms.
- Professional networking with agrifood experts, young leaders, and representatives from the UN and private sector.
- Capacity building, including proposal writing masterclasses and expert mentorship.
- Invitation to pitch your project live at the FAO headquarters in Rome, Italy.
- Post-event support, including access to the WFF Youth Food Lab incubator.
Who Can Apply?
To participate, you must hold at least a bachelor’s degree in a field related to agrifood systems. This could include:
- Agriculture
- Food Science
- Environmental Science
- Sustainable Development
- Or other relevant disciplines
How the Challenge Works
- Submit Your Concept Note
Applicants submit a 2-page concept note describing an innovative idea aligned with one of the four prize categories. - Get Shortlisted & Trained
Semi-finalists go through a month-long development programme, including masterclasses and mentoring from experts. - Refine & Pitch Your Proposal
After refining your ideas into detailed proposals, selected finalists will present their projects live in October at the TRC finals in Rome.
