Edo State Government Promotes 8,476 Public School Teachers, Boosts Education Reforms

The Edo State Government has officially started issuing promotion letters to 8,476 public school teachers across the state.

Dr. Paddy Iyamu, the Commissioner for Education, announced this during a press briefing in Benin. He explained that the promotion process began in February 2025 and is now concluding with the distribution of letters to the beneficiaries.

According to him, the move aims to reward and motivate teachers for better performance in their various roles.

Dr. Iyamu assured that the administration of Senator Monday Okpebholo is committed to transforming education in Edo State. He added that the newly-promoted teachers will also benefit from the recently increased minimum wage of N75,000, which was announced during the 2025 May Day celebration—up from the previous N70,000.

Speaking further, he said:

“We also have teachers who have been on a contract called Edo Supporting Teachers to Achieve Results (EdoSTAR). We are reviewing their appointments to see how we can absorb some of them who are qualified, because we are very particular about those to employ. After all, the quality of teachers is the quality of our children.”

He added that efforts are being made to ensure only the best hands are employed for the sake of the students’ development and future.

To strengthen the education workforce, interviews are currently underway for the recruitment of 500 new teachers into basic and senior secondary schools, as well as 100 teachers for technical colleges.

“The recruitment of 100 teachers into Technical Colleges in Edo State is to ensure that the youths acquire skills, in addition to normal educational certificates, to boost their employability, not only in the labour market, but also to be self-employed. Besides the fact that you go to school to acquire certificates, the role of technical education is also very sacred.”

Dr. Iyamu also highlighted key achievements of the current administration, including the increase in monthly funding for Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma—from N41 million to N500 million.

He mentioned the successful induction of 128 medical students and 810 nursing students who graduated in 2022 but were not inducted during the previous administration.

In addition, the commissioner praised the state governor for the ongoing renovation and rehabilitation of schools across all three senatorial districts. He said learning infrastructure such as chairs, desks, and textbooks have been provided to support quality education in public schools.
