A heartbreaking incident occurred in Ijebu Ode, Ogun State, on Friday, as a yet-to-be-identified female student of Seico Secondary School lost her life after being hit by a truck. Another student was critically injured in the same accident.
The tragic event took place on the recently rehabilitated Ikangba–Agoro Road. The students were reportedly on their way home after writing their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) when the truck, coming from the Molipa axis, lost control and veered into the opposite lane, striking the students.
Eyewitnesses confirmed that the truck crashed into the fence of a nearby Redeemed Christian Church after hitting the students.
Eko Nicholas, a local resident and chairman of the Ogun State chapter of the Campaign for Democratic and Workers’ Rights, shared his account:
“The students were obviously those writing this ongoing WASSCE because they were holding the question papers.
One of the students, a female, died on the spot while another female was also critically injured. We are all praying she makes it.”
Mr. Nicholas blamed repeated accidents in the area on the lack of speed control measures and proper street lighting, urging the government to act before more lives are lost.
“This is yet another needless death on the Ikangba/Agoro road, bringing the number of souls lost since February to six, not to mention those injured.
We again call on the state government to construct speed breakers and install street lights to stem these avoidable and painful deaths.”
The incident was confirmed by Babatunde Akinbiyi, the Public Relations Officer of the Ogun State Traffic Compliance and Enforcement Agency (TRACE), who stated simply, “one school pupil died.”
