A Nigerian-born researcher, Odii Chisom, has made history by becoming the youngest person in Africa to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree in Nursing with a specialisation in Symptom Science (Gynecologic Oncology). He achieved this at just 29 years old, completing the programme at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB), a university widely recognised for its contributions to cancer research and healthcare innovation.
His doctoral research focused on chemotherapy-induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN) among gynecologic cancer patients, as well as how social determinants of health affect symptom severity and healthcare equity. The findings are expected to contribute to precision symptom science, with the goal of improving the quality of life for patients undergoing treatment for gynecologic cancers.
Speaking on the achievement, Dr. Odii made clear that this goes beyond a personal accomplishment.
“This PhD represents not just an academic milestone but a commitment to bridging gaps in cancer care, especially for underserved populations. By focusing on symptom science and health equity, we can develop interventions that truly transform patient outcomes in gynecologic oncology,” he said.
He also raised concerns about the state of data-driven decision making in Nigeria, pointing out a gap that he believes is costing lives.
“It is unfortunate that data-driven policy making has yet to become the norm in our society. We still lack reliable figures on deaths, births, and key health indices for large segments of the population. Social determinants often drive mortality far more than genetic factors alone,” he said.
Dr. Odii went further to advocate for modern record-keeping systems and robust national databases to strengthen healthcare delivery and governance across the country.
“I am particularly eager to collaborate with Ebonyi State to develop a comprehensive database system leveraging Nigeria’s National Identification Number. This would create a secure, accessible platform for evidence-based policy making at both state and national levels. I call on the government to fully embrace data science and artificial intelligence, and to increase funding for research that translates into tangible improvements for our people,” he added.
