Students of Nasarawa State University, Keffi (NSUK), who were abducted by unknown gunmen, have regained their freedom. Their release was confirmed on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, following coordinated efforts by security operatives and members of the local community.
The news brought immediate relief to families, fellow students, and staff who had been anxious since the abduction was reported.
The Vice Chancellor of NSUK, Prof. Sa’adatu Hassan Liman, confirmed the development and expressed gratitude over the students’ safe return.
“We are grateful to God that our students have been released safely. They are currently undergoing medical checks and psychological support,” she said.
Her statement makes clear that while the students are physically free, their recovery is still ongoing. Medical and psychological care is being provided to help them readjust after what was clearly a harrowing experience.
The Nasarawa State Police Command also confirmed the rescue but held back full operational details, citing ongoing investigations.
“The students have been rescued. Further information will be provided as investigations continue,” the command stated.
One of the released students, speaking on condition of anonymity, opened up briefly about what the days in captivity felt like.
“We didn’t know if we would make it out. We are just grateful to be back home,” the student said.
Those few words speak volumes. For students who went to school expecting a normal day, the experience has left a mark that will take time to heal.
Police authorities in Nasarawa State have assured residents that efforts are ongoing to track down the kidnappers and prevent future attacks. The abduction had raised fresh concerns about the security situation around university campuses in north-central Nigeria, a region that has seen a troubling rise in kidnapping incidents in recent years.
NSUK is a state-owned university located in Keffi, Nasarawa State, serving thousands of students from across the country.
