The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has stopped posting corps members to three local government areas in Kebbi State following a worsening security situation caused by bandit attacks in the region.
The NYSC Coordinator in Kebbi, Bala Dabo Kagarko, disclosed this while speaking with journalists at the temporary NYSC orientation camp in Basura, Jega Local Government Area.
Kagarko said the affected council areas are Augie, Arewa and Sakaba, adding that the decision was taken to protect the safety of corps members serving in the state.
The deteriorating security situation also forced the NYSC to relocate its orientation camp from Dakingari to a temporary facility in Basura, Jega.
According to the coordinator, the number of corps members posted to Kebbi has dropped drastically as a result, leaving critical sectors severely understaffed.
“We no longer have doctors to post to the state hospitals, not enough corps members to post to schools and other areas where they are needed to contribute to the development of the state,” Kagarko said.
He revealed that Kebbi now has the least number of corps members of any state in the country, and that multiple appeals have been made to the appropriate authorities without any response so far.
“Several appeals have been made to the right quarters, but we are yet to get their response,” he added.
