The National Examinations Council (NECO) has taken strict action against examination malpractice by blacklisting 14 centres and sanctioning seven supervisors. These centres were found in Ogun and Oyo states, with 10 in Ogun and four in Oyo.
NECO Registrar, Prof. Dantani Wushishi, made this announcement at the council’s headquarters in Minna, Niger State, while releasing the results of the 2024 Senior School Certificate Examination (External). He also stated that the names of the affected centres and supervisors would be shared with other examination bodies for further sanctions.
“The number of candidates booked for various forms of malpractice is 6,169, compared to 8,518 in 2023, representing a 27.7 per cent decrease,” Wushishi noted. He further revealed that seven supervisors—two each from Oyo and Ogun, and one from Lagos, Cross River, and Ebonyi—were recommended for blacklisting due to poor supervision, lateness, and aiding malpractice.
Among the key statistics from the released results:
- 86,067 candidates registered for the exam, with 84,799 sitting for it.
- 62,929 candidates (75.62%) earned a credit or higher in English.
- 77,988 candidates (93.94%) achieved a credit or higher in Mathematics.
- 57,114 candidates (63.35%) obtained at least five credits, including English and Mathematics.
- 70,711 candidates (83.39%) secured five credits or more, regardless of English and Mathematics.
The Federal Ministry of Education has instructed that the details of the blacklisted centres and supervisors be shared with JAMB, WAEC, and other relevant bodies. This move reinforces NECO’s commitment to maintaining the integrity of its examinations and ensuring a fair system for all candidates.
