WAPCo Pledges $750,000 Annually to Empower Artisans and Students in Nigeria

For over a decade, the West African Gas Pipeline Company Limited (WAPCo) has been making a lasting impact in Nigeria through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives. Every year, the company commits $750,000 to vocational training and scholarships, supporting around 170 young artisans and university students from host communities in Lagos and Ogun States.

At the recent graduation ceremony for the Community Youth Empowerment Scheme (CYES) in Otta, Ogun State, WAPCo’s General Manager, Corporate Affairs, Dr. Isaac Adjei-Doku, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to empowering local communities. Beneficiaries received certificates and essential startup tools, including sewing machines, ovens, refrigerators, freezers, building materials, and catering equipment to help them launch or expand their businesses.

“Every year, we allocate no less than $750,000 across the four countries we operate in, and we’ve been doing this for over a decade. In Nigeria alone, WAPCo supports around 170 individuals annually through vocational training and scholarships across Ogun and Lagos states,” Adjei-Doku stated.

He emphasized the company’s commitment to social investment, noting that in addition to scholarships and vocational training, WAPCo also funds education and healthcare projects in its host communities. The introduction of the Livelihood Programme has further strengthened this commitment by providing opportunities for talented but disadvantaged individuals.

“We feel it’s our responsibility to give back to the communities that allow us to operate here. The company’s efforts align with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, as they prioritize social investment and community empowerment. Upon completing their training, beneficiaries receive tools to start their own businesses, helping to lift themselves and others out of poverty. WAPCo ensures follow-up support for those who have benefited from their programmes, fostering long-term success,” he added.

Community leaders also acknowledged WAPCo’s contributions. Oba Abdul Azeez Akinde, the Oloja Ekun of Igbesa Land, praised the company for its positive impact and pledged to safeguard the gas pipeline. Similarly, Oba Abdul-Wasiu Ogungbayi, the Onitetiku of Owode, Otta, emphasized the importance of monitoring the beneficiaries to ensure they maximize the opportunities given to them.

Speaking on behalf of the graduates, Adeyemi Oluwagbenga expressed gratitude for the training and equipment, highlighting how the initiative paves the way for financial independence and inspires others in the community.

With a strong track record of over 20 years in Nigeria, WAPCo continues to strengthen its relationship with host communities, ensuring that its social investments translate into real, sustainable change.
