The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has denied claims that the English Language paper written on Wednesday, May 28, during the ongoing WASSCE for school candidates was cancelled. The council described the viral report circulating online as completely false and misleading.
In a statement released on Tuesday, the Head of Public Affairs for WAEC Nigeria, Mrs. Moyosola Adesina, clarified that no subject—English Language or otherwise—has been cancelled in the ongoing examination. She stated that the fake press release did not originate from WAEC and does not reflect the council’s stance in any way.
“Although the source of the information is yet to be ascertained, the council is certain that the false claim is being spread by mischief-makers who are bent on bringing the council into disrepute and causing confusion and panic among candidates who sat the examination,” the statement read.
WAEC urged the public to rely only on its verified social media channels and accredited media platforms for accurate information. The council emphasized that all official press releases are issued and signed solely by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office.
“We also categorically state that all press releases are issued and signed by the Public Affairs Department on behalf of the Head of National Office. The public should disregard any information not disseminated through these official platforms,” the council added.
WAEC expressed gratitude to stakeholders for their trust and reassured the public of its continued commitment to providing quality and credible examinations, a tradition it has maintained for over 73 years.
