The Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SSANU) has called on the federal government to urgently tackle the electricity crisis affecting universities across the country.
In a New Year message delivered in Abuja, SSANU’s National President, Mr. Mohammed Ibrahim, expressed deep concern over the rising electricity costs in universities, which he said were crippling their ability to operate effectively.
“A reliable power supply is vital for administration, teaching, research, and community service within the university system,” Ibrahim emphasized. “We urge the federal government to take immediate action to resolve this energy crisis, as it directly impacts students, the primary stakeholders in our universities.”
Tax Reform Bill and Union Welfare
Ibrahim also addressed the Tax Reform Bill currently before the National Assembly, acknowledging its potential impact on the welfare of SSANU members. He stressed the importance of stakeholder engagement in the legislative process to ensure inclusivity, transparency, and fairness in policy-making.
“SSANU is committed to participating actively in this process and will soon articulate its position, advocating for reforms that protect the interests of its members while contributing to the nation’s economic growth,” Ibrahim stated.
Strengthening Relationships with the Education Ministry
The union urged the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa, and his team to strengthen their collaboration with SSANU. Ibrahim emphasized the importance of the federal government fulfilling its outstanding commitments to the union, noting that these promises are essential for maintaining industrial harmony and safeguarding the welfare of university staff.
Concerns Over Insecurity and Economic Challenges
SSANU reiterated its alarm over the escalating insecurity in the country, warning that sustainable development is unattainable without adequate security measures.
“Sustainable growth requires a secure environment,” Ibrahim said, urging the government to intensify its efforts in addressing the issue.
Ibrahim also highlighted the challenges posed by rising inflation, the high cost of living, and technological deficits within universities. He reaffirmed the union’s commitment to advocating for policies aimed at improving the economic and professional well-being of its members while pushing for technological upgrades to modernize Nigeria’s universities.
Message of Unity and Solidarity
“As we embark on this New Year, let us remain united and resolute in our mission to achieve fairness, equity, and justice for all members,” Ibrahim concluded. “The journey ahead may be challenging, but with collective strength and solidarity, we can overcome obstacles and achieve greater milestones.”
