House of Reps Demands Urgent Action on Withheld Bar Results and Delayed Call to Bar

The House of Representatives has demanded the immediate release of withheld Bar exam results and a swift resolution to the backlog of law graduates still waiting to be called to the Nigerian Bar.

Lawmakers described the situation as more than just an administrative delay—calling it a humanitarian crisis that threatens the future of aspiring legal professionals in the country.

This call to action came after a motion was presented by Benjamin Okezie Kalu and Hon. Ibrahim Ayokunle Isiaka. They raised serious concerns over the continued withholding of Bar Part 2 Examination results by the Council of Legal Education (CLE), the body responsible for administering the final exams for law students in Nigeria.

According to them, over 6,000 students are currently affected. Beyond the numbers, the consequences are deeply personal and painful. The sponsors of the motion shared tragic stories of students who have passed away while waiting for their results.

“This is not just an administrative issue; it is a humanitarian crisis,” the lawmakers stated.

They referenced the heartbreaking deaths of at least three students since November 2024, including Mr. Sunday Nwaham on March 22, 2025, and Mrs. Oluyinka Ogundipe on February 17, 2025. Both died without seeing the results of their hard work and years of dedication.

There was also mention of elderly candidates, some between the ages of 70 and 80, who pursued law out of passion and a sense of service. These individuals are now stuck in limbo, unable to fulfill their lifelong dream due to systemic delays.

“This situation is a gross injustice. Our legal system thrives on the principles of justice and fairness, yet the institutions responsible for training future lawyers are failing to uphold these very values,” the motion read.

In response, the House directed its Committees on Judiciary and Justice to engage directly with the Council of Legal Education and the Nigerian Law School. Their task: ensure the immediate release of all pending results and resolve the bottlenecks delaying the Call to Bar process.

The lawmakers also urged the CLE to establish a clearer, more efficient process for calling qualified students to the Bar—especially those who have completed their studies and are eager to contribute to Nigeria’s justice system.

The House emphasized that quick, decisive action is necessary not only to ease the emotional and psychological burden on affected students but also to uphold the credibility of the legal profession in Nigeria.
