NASU Sounds Alarm Over Unfair N50bn Allowance Deal

The Non-Academic Staff Union of Educational and Associated Institutions (NASU) has issued a strong warning to the Federal Government, stating that any attempt to distribute the N50 billion earned allowance solely to academic unions could spark industrial action across Nigerian universities.

During a two-day Trade Group Council Meeting of Universities and Inter-University Centres in Abuja, NASU’s General Secretary, Peter Adeyemi, expressed deep concern over what he described as a pattern of unfair treatment toward non-teaching staff.

“We have seen a disturbing pattern. When it comes to sharing earned allowances, the government allocates 70 per cent to academic staff, leaving just 30 per cent for the three non-teaching staff unions. We protested this injustice in the past, and it partly triggered our strike in 2022,” Adeyemi said.

He reminded the public that, following that strike, the union was invited to a meeting chaired by the then Minister of Education, Mallam Adamu Adamu. At that meeting, a resolution was reached and signed, promising that the N50 billion allowance would be shared equitably among both teaching and non-teaching staff.

NASU now fears the government might renege on that agreement, warning that any attempt to exclude non-academic staff from the upcoming disbursement would not be taken lightly.
