The Abia State University (ABSU) Senate has approved a ₦10 million endowment from renowned legal scholar and Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Prof. Mike Ozekhome, SAN. The generous donation will fund annual cash prizes for the university’s best graduating students across various disciplines.
This was disclosed in a statement by ABSU Registrar, Dr. Acho Elendu, and shared with journalists in Umuahia.
According to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Ndukwe Okeudo, who made the announcement during the 280th Regular Senate Meeting, the endowment will benefit top-performing students in both general academics and specifically within the Faculty of Law.
Prof. Okeudo detailed the award breakdown:
-
₦100,000 each for the best graduating male and female students in any discipline
-
₦100,000 for the best graduating student in Constitutional Law within the Faculty of Law
-
₦100,000 each for the best male and female law graduates
-
₦150,000 for the overall best graduating student in the entire university
He praised Prof. Ozekhome’s contribution, describing him as a distinguished law professor, Senior Advocate of Nigeria, and visiting professor in ABSU’s Faculty of Law.
“This endowment will run in perpetuity,” the Vice Chancellor confirmed, emphasizing the long-term impact of the gesture.
Prof. Okeudo also commended Abia State Governor and ABSU’s Visitor, Dr. Alex Otti, for his consistent infrastructural and financial support to the university. He described the Governor as “a rare gift to humanity.”
Stressing the need for collaboration in higher education, the Vice Chancellor called on alumni, private individuals, and organizations to emulate Prof. Ozekhome’s example and contribute to the university’s growth. “Education is too capital intensive to be left to the government alone,” he noted.
The Students Forum Nigeria serves as the ultimate hub for Nigerian students, fostering academic growth, social engagement, and knowledge sharing.
