The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) has released the official performance breakdown for the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME), revealing that only 420,415 candidates scored above 200 out of a total of 1,955,657 who sat for the exam.
This means that over 1.5 million candidates—about 75%—scored below 200, highlighting a concerning drop in overall performance. Less than 1% of candidates scored above 300.
In a statement released with the data, JAMB noted, “40,247 underage candidates were permitted to demonstrate their exceptional abilities. However, only 467 of these candidates (1.16%) achieved scores that meet the threshold for exceptional ability as defined for the UTME, with their performance in the subsequent three stages still pending.”

The board also disclosed that 97 candidates were caught for confirmed exam infractions, while 2,157 are currently under investigation for suspected malpractice.
Additionally, 71,701 registered candidates were absent. Candidates who faced biometric verification issues are being reviewed, and those cleared will be rescheduled to take the exam at approved centres.
JAMB confirmed that results for certain special groups, such as visually impaired candidates and those under the JAMB Equal Opportunity Group (JEOG), are still being processed.
A press conference is expected later in the week to announce result-checking procedures for individual candidates.
