Governor Nasir Idris of Kebbi State has questioned the sudden withdrawal of military personnel from Government Girls Comprehensive Secondary School, Maga, less than an hour before armed bandits invaded and abducted several students.
He spoke in Birnin Kebbi on Friday while hosting the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero. Idris described the timeline of events as deeply unsettling and called for an immediate investigation.
According to him, the state had earlier received credible intelligence hinting at a potential attack on the school. An emergency security meeting was held, and agencies reportedly assured him that the situation was under control and that adequate deployment would be made.
“As a responsive government, when we received intelligence on a possible attack, we summoned a security meeting. The security agencies assured us that all was well and that personnel would be mobilised to the school,” he said.
Idris noted that security personnel were deployed as promised but withdrew around 3:00 a.m.—only for the attack to take place about 45 minutes later.
“The military was deployed, but they later withdrew by 3 a.m., and by 3:45 a.m., the incident happened,” he lamented.
The governor described the development as heartbreaking for the state and families of the abducted students. He added that the government is working closely with security agencies to secure the victims’ safe return.
Ajaero, who visited to commiserate with the state, condemned the attack and urged security operatives to intensify efforts to rescue the students and strengthen protection around schools to prevent further tragedies.
