Lagos State Releases 2026/2027 Unified Academic Calendar for All Public and Private Schools

The Lagos State Government has approved and released a harmonised academic calendar for all public and private primary and secondary schools in the state, bringing both categories of schools under a single unified schedule for the 2026/2027 academic session.

The Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Tolani Alli-Balogun, announced this in a statement published on the official X account of the Lagos State Government on Thursday.

The calendar was finalised after two stakeholder meetings facilitated by the Office of Education Quality Assurance (OEQA), where participants reviewed and approved key dates for the session.

“The approved calendar outlines school resumption dates, mid-term breaks, examination periods and holidays. It is designed to help schools, teachers, parents and students plan effectively throughout the session,” the statement read.

The 2026/2027 academic session will kick off on Monday, September 14, 2026, following a two-day Staff Professional Development programme scheduled for September 10 and 11.

The first term runs until December 18, 2026, with a mid-term break from November 2 to November 6. The Christmas vacation follows from December 21, 2026, to January 8, 2027.

The second term begins January 11, 2027, and ends April 16, 2027, followed by a 10-day inter-term holiday from April 19 to April 30.

The third and final term runs from May 3 to July 30, 2027, with the long vacation commencing on August 2, 2027.

In total, the 2026/2027 session covers 182 instructional days, made up of 64 days in the first term, 61 in the second term and 57 in the third term.

Schools operating international curricula that require dates outside the approved calendar have been directed to apply for calendar flexibility on or before August 21, 2026, in line with the state’s guidelines.

The harmonised calendar is expected to address a longstanding challenge for families in Lagos, where public and private schools have often run on different schedules, making it difficult for parents with children in multiple schools to coordinate holidays and activities.

Alli-Balogun urged all public and private primary and secondary schools across the state to comply strictly with the approved calendar.

In a related development, the Lagos State Government has opened registration for the second run of the 2026 Computer-Based Test (CBT) Screening into its Model Colleges and Upgraded Junior Secondary Schools.

Registration opened on July 14, 2026, and closes on August 15, 2026. The screening exercise will hold on August 21 and 22, 2026, at the Public Service Staff Development Centre (PSSDC), Magodo, Lagos.

The second screening is targeted at candidates whose examination dates previously clashed with those of other examination bodies. The Registrar of the Lagos State Examinations Board, Adebayo Orunsolu, urged parents and guardians to register early.
