NSCDC Lagos Raises Alarm Over School Safety as Attacks on Students Continue Across Nigeria

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Lagos State Command has called on all Nigerians to embrace collective responsibility and security education to prevent violent attacks on schools across the country.

The call was made at the Lagos State Command’s 7th Public Relations Clinic, a quarterly event organised by the Command’s Public Relations Unit to strengthen public engagement, promote awareness and improve crisis communication.

Deputy Commandant of Corps Jimoh Sulaiman, representing the State Commandant Adedotun Keshinro, delivered the keynote address, reaffirming the NSCDC’s commitment to protecting schools, pupils, teachers, educational infrastructure and host communities.

Speaking on the theme “Security and Safety of Schools in Lagos: The Roles of Government, NSCDC and Stakeholders,” Sulaiman stressed the importance of security education in shielding schools from violent extremism, abductions and other threats.

He urged all stakeholders to remain vigilant and professional in working together to end the attacks and tragic incidents suffered by schoolchildren in various parts of Nigeria.

A professor of Sociology at the University of Lagos, Prof Waziri Adisa, advocated a whole-of-society approach to school safety, noting that secure schools guarantee uninterrupted learning, build public confidence and contribute to national development.

The Managing Director of Safety Signatures Ltd, Dr Cynthia Gregg, called for a safer learning environment for children across Lagos and urged stronger inter-agency collaboration, continuous training and enhanced capacity building to improve security operations.

The Lagos State Chairman of the Nigeria Union of Teachers (NUT), Comrade Akintoye Hassan, praised the NSCDC Lagos Command’s initiatives and called for stronger collaboration among government agencies, security organisations, school authorities and local communities to eliminate attacks on schools and pupils.

The event featured a technical panel session that included the Public Education Officer of the FRSC Lagos Sector Command, Elizabeth Jayeola; the Commander of the Special Female Squad of the NSCDC Lagos Command, Ada Agada; and a Basic Six pupil of Anuoluwapo Primary School, Miss Kolurejo Best.

Since its inauguration in June 2024, the NSCDC Lagos Public Relations Clinic has continued to build the capacity of security personnel and members of the public on issues relating to the Corps’ mandate, emerging security challenges and relevant laws.
