Meet Francis Olusegun, UNILORIN’s First-Ever 5.0 CGPA Graduate

Francis Joseph Olusegun has emerged as the 2026 overall best graduating student of the University of Ilorin (UNILORIN), finishing with a perfect CGPA of 5.00.

According to the university, he is the first student in its history to record a 5.0 out of 5.0 CGPA.

Francis, popularly known as “5.0,” graduated in Mathematics. He also won the Best Graduating Student awards in his department and in the Faculty of Physical Sciences.

In an interview with the Union of Campus Journalists, UNILORIN, he said the idea of a perfect score first came after his first-year results.

“I began to imagine graduating with a 5.00 CGPA after seeing my 100-level results.”

He added that the desire to be the best had been with him long before university.

Francis said he was the best graduating student in both primary and secondary school. He is also the first person in his immediate family to graduate with a first-class degree.

His journey was not without setbacks. He shared on social media that he scored 225 in the UTME, a score few would link to a perfect CGPA.

He also revealed that he sat JAMB, WAEC and NECO at the same time in SS2.

Keeping a flawless record across four sessions and eight semesters, he said, took self-belief, consistency and the ability to change his study methods when needed.

He also aimed to score above 70 per cent in assessments, to leave himself some room for error.

His story is a reminder that a modest start does not have to decide where a student ends up.
