The 1991 graduating class of the University of Benin’s Faculty of Law hosted a celebratory dinner in Lagos to honor their coursemate, Professor Edoba Omoregie, following his recent appointment as the 11th Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin.
Prof. Omoregie, a constitutional law expert, alumnus of UNIBEN, and Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), was appointed in October 2024 by the university’s governing council. This recognition marks a significant milestone in his academic career and leadership journey.
At the dinner, his former coursemates spoke glowingly about him. Delta State Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Ekemejero Ohwovoriole (SAN), described Omoregie as a determined individual with exceptional focus and integrity.
“He is my childhood friend and someone I’ve known for almost four decades,” Ohwovoriole shared. “Throughout that time, he has proven to be a man of integrity, focus, and generosity. He knows what he wants for the school and has a clear plan. We are here to support and encourage him to achieve great things for the university.”
Wellington Agharese, Managing Director of XPO Marine Services Limited and another coursemate, urged the celebrant to seize this opportunity to make a lasting impact.
“You are in a unique position and will receive plenty of advice,” Agharese said. “Some will be genuine, others less so. You must discern wisely. This is your moment to write your name in gold and showcase what you’re made of. Remember, this is just the beginning.”
Prof. Omoregie expressed deep gratitude for the recognition, emphasizing the significance of his new role as a call to service rather than personal glory.
“I am very elated to be honored by my peers—individuals I’ve known virtually all my life,” he remarked. “This appointment is an opportunity to make a difference in students’ lives, enhance the welfare of colleagues, and elevate the University of Benin’s academic standing.”
He also highlighted his administration’s five-point agenda, which focuses on academic excellence, vocational training, student and staff welfare, infrastructural development, and fostering campus unity.
“These goals are ambitious, but we have already started taking small, deliberate steps toward achieving them,” he added.
The evening was a testament to the enduring bonds of friendship and shared purpose among UNIBEN Law alumni, as well as a celebration of leadership and vision in Nigerian academia.
