KASU Lecturers Consider Fresh Strike Over Unmet Demands, Call Out Governor Uba Sani

Lecturers at Kaduna State University (KASU) are once again threatening to down tools over lingering issues with the state government.

In a statement released on Thursday, the chairman of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), KASU branch, Peter Adamu, expressed frustration at the government’s failure to honour agreements. The union had previously embarked on an indefinite strike on February 18, 2025, but suspended it after six days to give room for dialogue.

However, Adamu revealed that two scheduled meetings between the union and the state government were abruptly cancelled. This, he said, has cast doubt on the government’s seriousness in resolving the matter.

Among the issues still pending are withheld salaries from May to September 2022, unpaid SIWES supervision allowances, earned academic allowances, promotion arrears, pension remittances, group life assurance and death benefits, wage awards, and consequential salary adjustments. The lecturers are also demanding progress on financial autonomy for the university.

Adamu lamented that despite the willingness of ASUU to reach a flexible agreement, the government appears to have “returned to default settings,” forcing the union to consider resuming its suspended strike.

“The chairman appealed to the governor and stakeholders to step in and prevent another round of industrial action that could further disrupt academic activities at the university. He stressed the need for urgent intervention to address the lecturers’ grievances and ensure lasting stability.”
