The Kwara State Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, has assured Kwara State University (KWASU), Malete, of improved security following recent robbery incidents targeting off-campus student hostels. During his visit to the university, the Commissioner expressed full support for new security measures introduced by the institution’s management and community stakeholders.
The visit comes after multiple cases of robbery and housebreaking affecting students living in privately-owned hostels. In response, the university rolled out policies aimed at enhancing safety, including a requirement for all private hostel owners to employ vigilante security personnel. Students will be advised to avoid hostels that do not comply.
Other policies include a restriction on motorcycle (Okada) movement after 10 p.m., mandatory closure of campus-based shops by 11 p.m., and a ban on generator use beyond midnight. These rules are part of broader efforts to create a safer, quieter, and more secure learning environment.
Vice Chancellor Prof. Shaykh Luqman Alade Jimoh expressed appreciation to the police for their continued partnership and praised the professionalism of the Malete Divisional Police Officer and his team. He acknowledged the growing concern around student safety and confirmed that the university’s internal security committee has been activated to coordinate and enforce the new measures. He also thanked local community leaders for their cooperation.
Commissioner Ojo commended the university for its proactive approach and assured the school of increased police presence to help enforce the rules. He also praised the KWASU Students’ Union Government for their collaboration, describing student leaders as important allies in keeping peace on campus.
Ojo reiterated the police command’s commitment to investigating the recent robberies and restoring confidence among students and residents. He firmly warned that phone searches by officers are illegal and violate personal rights, noting that any officer caught engaging in such acts would be dealt with.
The Commissioner visited the affected hostel, spoke with students, and offered personal safety advice, reinforcing the command’s commitment to student welfare and campus security.
