The management of the Federal University Oye-Ekiti (FUOYE) has suspended two senior officials and the President of the Students’ Union Government following allegations that students were forced to pay an unauthorised levy.
The university’s Registrar, Mufutau Ibrahim, confirmed the suspensions in a statement on Tuesday.
The three suspended individuals are the Director of the Directorate of Educational Technology, Innovation and Entrepreneurship, Olanrewaju Ogunjobi; the Deputy Dean of Student Affairs and Support Services, Banji Rildwan Olaleye; and the SUG President, James Iyanuoluwa Adio.
According to Ibrahim, Ogunjobi and Olaleye were accused in a petition of collecting N1,000 from each 100-level student, allegedly for practical sessions conducted by the directorate, without obtaining the required approvals from the university.
“With respect to Ogunjobi, the committee found that he allegedly authorised and collected the sum of one thousand naira from each affected student without recourse to the senate, management, or the university’s extant directives that all payments must be made through the bursary and with the approval of management,” the registrar said.
Olaleye was also alleged to have played a role in the collection process despite holding a key position within the university’s student affairs structure.
The SUG President’s involvement went further, according to the registrar. Ibrahim alleged that Adio participated in the initial sharing of the funds and later requested a refund, which resulted in a transfer of N700,000 into his personal bank account.
The university said a preliminary fact-finding committee was set up to investigate the allegations, and all named individuals were invited to appear before it and respond to the claims against them.
The committee’s findings pointed to financial misconduct, prompting management to take immediate action.
“The university will not tolerate the extortion of students, abuse of office, financial impropriety, or corruption in any form,” Ibrahim stated.
The university added that the suspensions are part of ongoing efforts to protect students from exploitation and uphold the integrity of its financial processes while investigations continue.
