Governor Monday Okpebholo of Edo State has declared a state of emergency on public schools following a recent visit to two government-owned institutions in Benin City.
During his inspection of Evbareke Secondary School in Egor and Army Day Secondary School in Ikpoba-Okha, the governor expressed deep concern over the poor state of the facilities. Visibly moved by what he saw, Governor Okpebholo described the situation as completely unacceptable.
“I feel very bad, I must be honest with you. Look at this place, children are here studying. For me, it is unacceptable,” he said.

Students and teachers also shared their frustrations with the governor during his visit. They highlighted the lack of basic amenities and the degrading state of their school buildings. According to them, classrooms often leak when it rains, and it’s not uncommon to arrive in the morning and find excreta scattered around the premises.
Governor Okpebholo’s declaration signals a bold step toward prioritizing the education sector in Edo State and addressing the long-standing neglect of public schools.
