Miss Isioma Sybil Nwosu from the Department of Biochemistry has made history as the best-graduating student of Lagos State University (LASU) for the 2023/2024 academic session, achieving an outstanding CGPA of 4.93.
The announcement was made by LASU’s Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Ibiyemi Olatunji-Bello, during a press briefing ahead of the university’s 28th Convocation ceremony. She expressed pride in the institution’s commitment to producing highly skilled graduates ready to make an impact both locally and internationally.
“This year’s Convocation, like previous editions, is organised into two segments: pre-convocation events and the main convocation events,” she stated.
The week-long convocation will feature a mix of academic and cultural events, starting with a sports competition and religious services, followed by a keynote lecture delivered by Dr. Maruf Olatunji Alausa, Nigeria’s Minister of Education. The grand ceremony will culminate in the awarding of diplomas, first degrees, postgraduate degrees, and honorary distinctions.
A total of 971 diploma students and 8,711 undergraduates will be receiving their degrees. Among them, 192 students secured first-class honours, while 3,076 earned second-class upper division degrees. Prof. Olatunji-Bello proudly announced that “NWOSU ISIOMA SYBIL from the Biochemistry Department, with a CGPA of 4.93, is our overall best-graduating student for the 2023/2024 academic session.”

On the postgraduate level, 2,235 students will be conferred with higher degrees, including 125 Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) recipients. Additionally, LASU’s Senate will honour two distinguished Nigerians with honorary doctorate degrees—Brigadier General Buba Marwa (Rtd.), Chairman of the NDLEA and former Military Governor of Lagos State, and Otunba Olufemi Olusegun Pedro, former Deputy Governor of Lagos State.
Prof. Olatunji-Bello also highlighted LASU’s achievements over the past year, including the full accreditation of 43 out of 44 courses by the National Universities Commission (NUC), strategic partnerships with international institutions, and the university’s continued recognition as the best state university in Nigeria and a top-ranked institution in Sub-Saharan Africa.
With her remarkable academic feat, Isioma Nwosu stands as a beacon of excellence, embodying LASU’s mission to nurture leaders and changemakers for the future.
