Lagos State University (LASU) has dismissed two senior lecturers — Dr. Olatunji Abanikanda and Dr. Khadeejah Kareem-Ibraheem — following serious allegations of misconduct ranging from sexual harassment to financial misappropriation.
The decision came during the university’s 143rd Governing Council meeting held on July 3, 2025, after a thorough review by the Joint Council and Senate Disciplinary Committee. A formal statement was released by the university management confirming their dismissal.
Dr. Abanikanda, formerly the Dean of the School of Agriculture at the Epe campus, was found guilty of maltreating 400-level students by making them work on the university farm from 6:30 a.m. to 10 p.m. under harsh weather conditions — without food, water, or breaks. He was also accused of sexually harassing female students and using abusive language toward staff and students.
According to LASU, the allegations were supported by a viral video and testimonies from students, prompting an internal investigation that validated the claims.
In a related case, Dr. Kareem-Ibraheem, the former coordinator of the Department of Animal Sciences at the same campus, was indicted for dereliction of duty and mismanagement of funds. She allegedly failed to remit proceeds from farm produce sales worth over ₦10.6 million into the university’s account, instead keeping the money for personal use.
“These actions constitute serious misconduct as defined under the Conditions of Service of Senior Staff, 2017 (as amended),” LASU’s statement read.
The university emphasized its zero-tolerance stance on abuse of office, reinforcing its dedication to maintaining a safe and disciplined academic environment.
This development is part of a broader crackdown across Nigerian universities, where more than 50 lecturers have been disciplined in recent years for sexual misconduct, abuse of power, and corruption.
