17,130 Students Matriculated at YABATECH as Tinubu Approves Its University Status

Yaba College of Technology (YABATECH) has matriculated 17,130 students for the 2025/2026 academic session, and the event came with a major announcement: President Bola Tinubu has approved the institution’s transition into a Technical and Vocational University.

The Rector, Dr. Ibraheem Abdul, revealed that 24,655 candidates applied for admission, but only 17,130 passed the rigorous screening to secure places across the National Diploma, Higher National Diploma, and B.Sc Education programmes.

Dr. Abdul called the presidential approval a landmark milestone, saying it “strategically strengthens skills-based education, innovation and industrial development, while supporting government’s drive for youth empowerment, job creation and economic diversification nationwide.”

Addressing the new students, he described them as future leaders and change-makers whose academic journey would shape their character, professional growth, and Nigeria’s global competitiveness.

“The nation looks to your generation for solutions in technology, innovation, entrepreneurship and sustainable development. YABATECH is ready to equip you through determination, discipline and unwavering academic focus,” he said.

The rector also noted that YABATECH has an ongoing academic affiliation with the University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), which allows the institution to run Bachelor of Science in Education degree programmes on its campus, with UNN accrediting the curriculum and awarding the degrees.

On discipline, Dr. Abdul was firm. He warned that any student caught in cult-related activities would face immediate expulsion and possible prosecution.

“Choose honour, discipline and academic excellence, the opportunities before you are enormous. Join recognised academic societies, professional clubs, and student associations to develop leadership skills and build networks,” he said.

He pointed to YABATECH’s growing industry partnerships, expanded digital infrastructure, research grants, and innovations like the PlastoGas Hub, which have earned the institution international recognition.

Dr. Abdul also reminded students that 75 per cent class attendance is mandatory under both YABATECH’s policy and NBTE regulations, urging them to make full use of the institution’s workshops, laboratories, studios, and ICT facilities.
