New FG Directive: WAEC, NECO Certificates to Feature NIN, Photos, and DOB

In a move aimed at curbing exam malpractice, the Nigerian government has directed that all public examination bodies begin embedding National Identification Numbers (NIN), Dates of Birth (DOB), and candidate photographs on certificates issued to successful candidates.

The directive came from the Minister of Education, Tunji Alausa, during the launch of a committee focused on transitioning key exams, such as those by WAEC, NECO, and NABTEB, from traditional paper-based formats to Computer-Based Testing (CBT) within the next three years.

Alausa highlighted the growing concern of cheating and identity theft in exams, stating that the inclusion of NIN, DOB, and photographs on certificates would significantly help reduce these issues. He pointed out that examination malpractices are not just confined to students, but also involve parents, teachers, school principals, and even exam supervisors.

“It is unfortunate that some parents, teachers, and principals collude to facilitate cheating. We need to address this issue from all angles,” Alausa said.

The newly formed committee has six key objectives, including eliminating exam leakages, tackling identity theft, and overseeing the transition to CBT. The Minister confirmed that the goal is for all exams to be computer-based by 2027, with technology playing a central role in combating malpractice.

Alausa also emphasized the need for improved supervision of exams and the establishment of clear guidelines for exam invigilators. The ministry has set a target for the next round of exams, taking place in May-June, to feature three identifiers on certificates: NIN, candidate photos, and DOB.

“We are committed to ensuring that all exam results are securely and accurately issued with these three identifiers,” he added.
