FUNAAB Students Dazzle at Fashion Show Celebrating Nigerian Textiles and Cultural Heritage

Final year students of the Department of Home Science and Management at the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta (FUNAAB) turned heads on May 13, 2026, with a stunning fashion show that blended culture, creativity, and academic excellence on one runway.

The event, themed “Heritage of the Culture: A Bridal and Owambe Runway Experience Celebrating Indigenous Textiles,” was held at the Cooperative Building and attracted staff, students, fashion enthusiasts, and members of the university community.

Representing the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Babatunde Kehinde, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), Prof. Olusegun Idowu, described the show as more than a display of clothing.

He said it reflected the rich history, traditions, and cultural identity that live inside indigenous fashion and textile designs, and commended the graduating students for their dedication and exceptional craftsmanship.

Prof. Idowu also urged the Department to sustain and expand the initiative, reaffirming the university’s commitment to practical teaching in fashion and textile studies.

Speaking earlier, the Acting Head of Department, Dr. Bolanle Oyundoyin, highlighted the significance of traditional fabrics like Adire from Abeokuta and Osogbo, Aso-Oke from Iseyin, and Kente from Ghana as powerful symbols of African identity and history.

She raised concern over the growing influence of fast fashion, warning that it risks eroding the true cultural and artistic value of indigenous clothing.

“Our heritage should not become a museum artefact locked behind glass,” she said, stressing that cultural traditions must evolve while staying relevant in today’s world.

Dr. Oyundoyin added that the fashion show also created opportunities for rural artisans and custodians of indigenous traditions to reach wider global markets.

Prof. Adetoun Amubode described the annual show as a vibrant platform for learning, innovation, and cultural expression, noting that heritage represents a priceless treasure that defines the identity and values of a people.

The highlight of the event was the dazzling runway presentation by the final year students, where each design told a story of culture, craftsmanship, and originality.
